After a tight race with Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, former Vice President Joe Biden is projected to win the Democratic presidential primary in Texas. The win carries 228 delegates.
Sanders had been leading in several recent polls, but Biden saw a surge in support after his big win in South Carolina on Saturday.
Texas was critically important to Biden, as Sanders is expected to win big in California. In the lead up to Super Tuesday, he received a number of endorsements, including from Austin Mayor Steve Adler, who previously endorsed former South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg.
Buttigieg dropped out of the race Sunday and endorsed Biden. Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar also suspended her campaign and endorsed Biden. She appeared at a rally for the former vice president in Dallas on Monday night, joined by another former candidate, Texan Beto O'Rourke.
Adler said he’s confident about Biden’s chance, despite the fact that more than 1 million Texans have already voted.
“There will be people that will be engaged in voting in this primary that have never voted in a primary election before, and I don't think we know what’s going to happen,” he told MSNBC on Monday.
Both former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren also competed hard in Texas. Both held rallies in the state over the weekend.
