Tyrone Swoopes scored on a 6-yard touchdown run in the second overtime, clinching a 50-47 win for Texas over 10th-ranked Notre Dame late Sunday night. Freshman Shane Buechele started at quarterback over Swoopes, but the senior played a huge role in Texas' running game with three scores – two of those in the overtime possessions.
Head coach Charlie Strong says this was a big win, but they’re not going to rest on any laurels.
“We got to get better. Let’s not, all of a sudden, let everybody pat ourselves on the back and say, ‘Hey, that was a great win,’" said Strong. "There’s a lot more games to go play. And if we just rest on this game, then all of a sudden allow someone to slip up on us, then this game won’t mean as much.”

Buechele was impressive on his own with 280 yards passing, two long touchdown throws and a rushing touchdown at DKR-Memorial Stadium. He is the first freshman quarterback to start a Longhorns season opener since Bobby Layne in 1944.
