Swimmers enjoy Barton Springs Pool during warmer times. The pool will be closed for about seven weeks starting Monday.

With temperatures barely breaking into the 60s this weekend, a dip in Barton Springs Pool might not be the first thing on your mind. But it will be your last chance to enjoy the swimming hole until mid-March.

The City of Austin will be closing Barton Springs Pool on Monday, January 24 to "remove large deposits of gravel and flood debris that have gradually accumulated in the deep end of Barton Springs Pool since 1991," according to the city's website.

The city says it will take special care to avoid harming the endangered Barton Springs Salamander and nearby trees.  The pool is scheduled to reopen on March 12.

You might not think a dip in the pool would be tolerable in such cold winter weather, but as Austin 360 reported earlier this month, people do it all the time. That's because while it may be in the 50s outside, the water maintains a comfortable 71 degree temperature year-round.
