Going Downtown for the Fourth? Here's What You Need to Know

Preparations are underway for the Auditorium Shores concert and fireworks show Thursday.

The festivities start at 8:30 p.m., with a performance by the Austin Symphony. Fireworks are set to start at 9:30 p.m., and the event is expected to end at 10 p.m.

Above, you'll find a map of street closures for the event — streets marked red will be completely closed. Those in blue will be partially shut down.

Riverside Drive will close Thursday at 10 a.m. from South Lamar Blvd. to South 1st St. Then, starting at 3 p.m., Cesar Chavez will close from Mopac to South Congress Ave. The bridge over Lady Bird Lake closes to vehicle traffic starting at 6 p.m.

The city has released a map of parking lots available in the downtown area. Capital Metro is adding extra buses to some routes and extending service in some areas to encourage people to take public transportation.

Austin Police remind revelers who are planning to drive to appoint a designated driver. They'll be enforcing a no-refusal policy.

For those who don't plan ahead, AAA is offering its "Tipsy Tow service" – a complimentary service that will tow drivers (and their vehicles) home –  up to 10 miles away.

Here's a few things the city says you should NOT to bring to Auditorium Shores for the fireworks:

  • Alcohol
  • Glass
  • Styrofoam
  • Grilling supplies (it won't be allowed on Thursday for safety reasons)
  • Pets (those that are afraid of fireworks won't enjoy the show!)
