Texas schools and school districts will be labeled from A to F starting next school year.
The new system will replace the current labels that range from academically unacceptable to exemplary. Texas Education Commissioner Michael Williams explained his decision today to the state’s Senate Education Committee.
“You can be academically unacceptable and just be barely short of the line," Williams said. "But when you have a system that has five differentiating grades, you can give much clearer, I think, information to taxpayers, to parents, even kids about where their school stands.”
Senate Education Committee chairman Dan Patrick had already filed a bill that would have made the change to letter grades, but Williams said he believed he had the authority to make the change on his own.
