Paul Chryst Has Been Offered the Offensive Coordinator Posiion at UT

According to published reports from the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel and others, current University of Wisconsin offensive coordinator, Paul Chryst, has been offered the same position at Texas.

The 45 year-old Wisconsin native and UW graduate would reportedly receive a steep salary increase if he joins the UT coaching staff.  Mack Brown and Texas are reportedly able to offer $1 million.  Chryst’s current annual compensation package is $361,094.

Under Chryst, Wisconsin set school records for total points and points per game last season, finishing the season in the top ten in scoring offense.  Texas ranked 88th.

This has been a tumultuous offseason for the Longhorn football program.  After a disappointing 5-7 season, just one year removed from a national title game appearance, the Texas coaching staff was turned upside down. First it was the retirement of offensive coordinator Greg Davis, offensive line coach Mac McWhorter and defensive tackles coach Mike Tolleson. Then it was the departure of defensive coordinator and “head-coach-in-waiting” Will Muschamp and assistant athletics director for football operations George Wynn to Florida.

Muschamp will take over for Urban Meyer as Florida’s head football coach.  Wynn was hired as Florida’s director of football operations.  Last week, former Longhorns wide receivers coach, Bobby Kennedy, left Texas to take the same position at Colorado.

Texas head coach Mack Brown has taken his time assembling his new cabinet of coaches.  On Sunday evening, Texas announced the hiring of Darrell Wyatt as their new wide receivers coach.  And yesterday, Bo Davis was officially announced as the new defensive tackles coach.  Current Mississippi State defensive coordinator, Manny Diaz, was reported to have met with Texas officials in Austin yesterday about the vacant DC job at UT.
