APD Officer Killed in the Line of Duty to be Buried Today
Today, APD Senior Police Officer Jaime Padron will be buried in San Angelo. The local funeral will begin at 10 a.m., followed a procession to Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens where Padron will be laid to rest.
Padron was remembered in Austin on Wednesday with a funeral, police honors service and procession.
Padron was shot and killed last Friday while responding to a call at a North Austin Wal-Mart. He served the Austin Police Department for about three years and also had experience as an airport police officer at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and with the San Angelo Police Department.
Padron had two daughters, ages 10 and 6.
Texas Medical Board Considers Guidelines for Adult Stem Cells
Today the Texas Medical Board is set to discuss and possibly approve changes to the Texas Administrative Code that would affect the use of “investigational agents”—most notably, adult stem cells.
The board heard a presentation on adult stem cells by Dr. Stanley Jones of Houston back in June of 2011. Jones was the doctor who performed an adult stem cell infusion on Governor Rick Perry during back surgery.
In February, the Texas Medical Board gave preliminary approval of new guidelines regarding investigational agents, including what exactly that term defines and when they are appropriate to use.
Part of the controversy over whether the board should approve such guidelines for adult stems cells is the fact that the Food and Drug Administration has not approved the procedure as a treatment regimen. In the proposed rule change, the Texas Medical Board says “physicians should be allowed a reasonable and responsible degree of latitude in the kinds of therapies they offer their patients” and that the use of investigational agents is a practice of medicine so should be regulated by the board.
The Texas Medical Board is meeting at 333 Guadalupe, Tower 2, Suite 225. An open forum for public comments is on the agenda and is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
Republican U.S. Senate Candidates Debate Tonight

Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst, Former Texas Solicitor General Ted Cruz, former ESPN commentator Craig James and former Dallas mayor Tom Leppert will go head to head. Each will try to convince voters that they are the right candidate to fill Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison’s seat.
Earlier this week, James accused Cruz of trying to skew the debate because of a text message.
The primary is May 29; early voting starts April 30.
