North Texas Tremor
An earthquake shook part of North Texas early this morning.
The U.S. Geological Survey says the 3.1 magnitude earthquake happened about 16 miles south of Fort Worth and just over 150 miles north of Austin.
The local sheriff’s office says so far there are no reports of injuries or damage.
Juneteenth in Austin
Several Juneteenth festivities, celebrating the day when Texas slaves learned they were free under President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, are on the horizon.
President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, but slaves in Texas remained unaware of their freedom until General Gordon Granger read the order in Galveston on June 19, 1865.
Juneteenth, or Emancipation Day, is the oldest known African-American celebration commemorating the end of slavery, according to The Central Texas Juneteenth Committee. The committee will host a talent show at Rosewood Park and a community clean-up at 13th and Chicon Streets Saturday.
The Austin Parks and Recreation Department’s celebration on Saturday at the George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center will feature a marketplace, performances from the Carver African Drum Class, a self-portrait art class and more.
The Juneteenth Committee’s annual 2K Freedom Walk, Juneteenth Historical Parade and Park Celebration are scheduled for Tuesday, June 19.
The Heat Dries Out the Thunder
Last night, the Miami Heat fended off the Oklahoma City Thunder 100-96 in the second game of the NBA Championship series. The series is now tied 1-1.
Both team’s forwards – the Heat’s LeBron James and the Thunder’s Kevin Durant – led scoring with 32 points apiece.
The two went head-to-head in the final seconds of the game when Durant, guarded by LeBron, missed a two-pointer that would have made up OKC’s game-long points deficit. Though Durant, a former UT student, accused James of foul play, the referees made no call. James rebounded the ball, scoring again, widening the point-gap and winning the game for the Heat.
Game Three will be played Sunday at 7 p.m. in Oklahoma City.
