Big Tex’s big comeback has reached an important step: The State Fair of Texas has chosen a new voice for the iconic, talking statue.
But according to KERA News in Dallas, fair officials won’t announce who will voice the new Big Tex until he’s unveiled on September 27 – opening day at the fair.
The old Big Tex was destroyed in an electrical fire last year. Since then, the State Fair of Texas has banded together to rebuild Big Tex in time for this year's fair.
Fair vice president of public relations Sue Gooding described the process of selecting Big Tex's new voice. She told KUT that out of 111 submissions, four finalists made the cut.
The former voice of Big Tex was let go in March. KERA also reports that Big Tex will now stand 55-feet tall – three feet taller than its previous 52-foot height.
