AM Update: Triple Digit Temperatures, Earthquakes Shake Texas, Crime on Campus

Triple Digit Temperatures Descend on Austin

This weekend saw triple digit temperatures arrive in Central Texas.

The National Weather Service predicts temperatures above 100 degrees every day this week. Tuesday should reach a stifling 106 degrees.

Meanwhile, chances of rain are slim and Central Texas remains in a state of moderate drought. Texas farmers and ranchers had hoped for some major rain as a result of Tropical Storm Debby, but the weather pattern has stayed relegated to the eastern Gulf of Mexico.

The heat wave will also cause strain on the state’s power grid, but  the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) remains optimistic they’ll avert rolling blackouts this summer.

Earthquakes Hit Texas

Texas may not see extreme weather from Tropical Storm Debby, but has been rattled by earthquakes.

Quakes occurred in both North and South Texas yesterday, reports the U.S. Geological Survey. A 3.4 magnitude quake hit 16 miles west-southwest of Three Rivers and a 3.6 quake hit four miles west-northwest of Alvarado.

Alvarado is in the natural gas-rich Barnett Shale, which has seen much hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking” used to extract energy sources. Three Rivers is near the Eagle Ford Shale. Critics have questioned whether fracking could play a role in previous Texas earthquakes.

No serious damages or injuries have been reported.

UT Police Seek Sexual Assault Suspect

The University of Texas Police Department is looking for the suspect of an attempted sexual assault which occurred yesterday afternoon in Roberts Hall on the UT campus.

The suspect is described as an Asian male, approximately 5' 4" tall, thin build, medium length black hair combed from left to right, last seen wearing black rimmed glasses, black basketball shorts, dark blue t-shirt, and a yellow or light-colored bracelet on right wrist.
