How You Can Help SXSW Crash Victims

After an early morning crash on Red River Street claimed two lives and hospitalized almost two dozen people, some are understandably asking, "What can I do to help?" Here are some ideas.

Give Money:  SXSW, the City of Austin and Transmission Events set up a relief fund for the victims and their families. You can make a donation at Other ways to contribute are

Albert Smith, who operates the Unofficial SXSW Guide, is also raising money at this GoFundMe page

A benefit is planned for Thursday night from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Summit Rooftop Lounge. Some brands are holding an event at 360 Nueces Thursday from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Give Blood: Area blood supplies took a hit last night as hospitals rushed to help victims. Cindy Rowe with the Blood and Tissue Center of Central Texassay they had enough blood supply to meet demand from local hospitals, but the event has brought their already limited supply to critically low levels.

“We still weren’t up to par on our inventory for that blood type, but now all blood types need to be replenished," said Rowe.

Type O+ and Type O- blood are needed most. Find where and when to donate here

Give Evidence: Police have a lot of witness testimony, and today Austin police chief Art Acevedo said he is "so proud that so many people that witnessed this stayed behind." But others may have video and are wondering what to do with it.

Acevedo says the answer is to give it to the police, who can use it to bolster their investigation. You can call police at 512-974-5186. You can email APD at
