The Austin Independent School District announced in September a plan to close and consolidate schools. I spent almost every day after that announcement talking with parents, teachers, community members and students about these possible changes.
Of the 12 schools on the initial list for closure, a good portion have a community of parents who speak only Spanish.
When AISD held public meetings on the proposed changes, there were translators available. Yet, I still heard over and over that people who don’t speak English as their first language were struggling to get information.
We want to help solve that problem, in the small way we can. KUT has hired professional translators and will be publishing Spanish versions of web stories on the closures, so more of the community can stay informed.
Sometimes these stories will be published at the same time as the English versions; in breaking news situations, there might be a lag while the translators work.
We’d appreciate your help in spreading the word when we publish these stories, and if you have any questions or suggestions, please contact me at Claire@kut.org.
