Mack Brown Suspends WR's, Says Horns Have 'Another Run' Left in Them

Andrew Weber for KUT News

As summer heats up, the Texas Longhorns are taking to the practice fields.

Today, UT Football Coach Mack Brown said, this year, the team is looking to rebound from last year’s lackluster season, that the team will move forward with Quarterback David Ash firmly at the helm and that wide receivers Cayleb Jones and Kendall Sanders will be suspended for the Horns' first game against New Mexico State.

“I do think that we’re headed back in the right direction and that we have another run in us, and that I want them to hang on and be positive and continue to love their school and they’re going to enjoy the ride.”

Unlike last year, Brown said the Horns will have an anchor at the quarterback position this fall. Junior David Ash will continue to start at quarterback, with Case McCoy backing him up.

“He’s definitely in a different place than he was,” Brown says. “He is the guy on offense that is running the team. We’re not in here talking about who is going to be the quarterback now for the first time in the last two years and I think that puts him in a lot better place with the other kids.”

McCoy may not be a shoe-in for the back-up job, however, as he will miss some summer workouts because of a 10-week mission trip in Peru.

Brown added that wide receivers Cayleb Jones and Kendall Sanders have been reinstated to the team, but will be suspended for UT’s first game against New Mexico State on August 31st.

We feel like they’ve gone through the disciplinary action that has not been in public, that’s in house,” Brown says. “But, also, our policy with football has been that a young that gets charged with the law, misses a ball game in the fall.”
