"To me, it changes the landscape of the sport, and I wonder what kind of path it sets us on for the sport long term," says Sam Khan, a Texas college football writer for The Athletic.

An announcement to let their media rights agreement with the conference expire comes days after the universities signaled interest in joining the Southeastern Conference.
