Original Story (July 8, 10 a.m.): The Senate Health & Human Services Committee is holding a public hearing today on a bill that would limit access to abortions in Texas.
Public testimony on Senate Bill 1 began just after 11 a.m. Eleven groups of 60 people filled out paperwork necessary to testify on, for or against the bill before the committee. Public testimony is limited to two minutes per person.
If everyone speaks for the maximum two minutes each, testimony could stretch well into tomorrow.
People that missed the cut-off for testimony will be allowed to register their opinion on the bill, but will not be able to speak before the committee.
At a House committee meeting last week, more than 1,000 people who signed up to testify on the house version of the bill (House Bill 2) were unable to. The House committee passed the bill. The full Texas House of Representatives is expected to take up the bill this week.
