It’s a busy weekend in Austin, with Halloween and Formula 1 festivities. That means downtown road closures.
Trinity between Cesar Chavez and 4th Street will be closed until midnight for Formula One. So will 2nd and 3rd Streets between Trinity and San Jacinto. Neches between 4th and 5th Streets will also be closed all day.
Halloween on 6th street is an Austin favorite, and starting at 5pm, the street will close between the I-35 Frontage Road and Brazos Street. Both the I-35 northbound and southbound exit ramps for 6th Street will be closed. So will side streets off of 6th between 5th and 7th Streets.
Given the closures and parking headaches (along with the potential for over-imbibing), you might want to find a way downtown that doesn't involve driving your car.
Capital Metro is offering expanded late-night service on Friday and Saturday night. MetroRail is running until 2:30 am Saturday morning and around midnight Saturday night. The E-Bus and Night Owl buses run until 3:00 am or later on some routes.
UT students can take advantage of a pilot program the university is running called Safe Ride. A service called uRide will pick up students at the corner of San Jacinto and 8th Street between midnight and 3 am, and take them to their home -- as long as it's in 78705 (UT campus and West Campus) or 78741 (East Riverside area).
Of course, there's always taxis, Uber and Lyft.
