Now that the 2024 election is over in Texas, the issue of protecting ballot secrecy is receiving renewed attention in the courts and the legislature.

The Republican narrowly beat Democrat Alex Villalobos with 52.69% of the vote.

The win continues the state’s streak of going red in every presidential election since it went for Jimmy Carter in 1976.

The Republican has a fraught relationship with the national group that issued the letter. Indiana and Montana also did not sign on.

Texans from across the state went to the polls early with plenty on their mind. The Texas Newsroom partnered with other news organizations to hear from a diverse cross-section of voters.

The move comes after Secretary of State Jane Nelson said state law bars federal monitors from being inside polling locations. Attorney General Ken Paxton’s office also wants to block monitors from future elections.

This year early voting coincides with Halloween, which means you may see a ghoul or goblin exercising their right to vote. You too can dress up if you wish.
